LG Stylo 3 Plus phablet with Android. A major improvement over my previous Samsung ATIV s with Windows Phone 8, most notably in the following areas:

  • Camera – LG has Optical Image Stabilization and far greater resolution
  • Touch Keyboard – ATIV s was much more prone to adjacent key typing errors, even without using the LG’s stylus
  • Apps – many Windows Phone apps do not work correctly, presumably because they were poorly tested automated conversions from Android or Apple; many Android apps are not available at all on Windows Phone

Current App Preferences

  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Webroot SecureAnywhere Mobile Premier
  • Firefox
  • TeamViewer for Remote Control
  • Teamviewer QuickSupport
    • QS Add-On: Samsung
  • BackBlaze – account viewer only
  • ConnectBot – SSH client
  • Fast discharge – used to test USB chargers for counterfeits
  • TD (Canada)

At the end of a two year contract with TELUS Mobility that included a Samsung Note 4, Shaw’s new Freedom Mobile had built LTE coverage to my home, and offered a plan that would save me $40/month. I made the switch in June 2017, after paying TELUS $50 to unlock my phone, and Shaw $10 for a new SIM card.

A rarely used clamshell-style traditional cellphone was $10/month but has built up such a large balance that it is free most months. In 2016, TELUS announced the end of their CDMA network and provided a new Alcatel phone and SIM card at no charge, grandfathering the $10/month pre-paid plan and retaining the accumulated balance

Shaw continues its strong presence in Wi-Fi Hot Spots via ShawOpen/ShawGo.
